Our Mission: Keep farming; feed people; build community.
Massaro Community Farm is a non profit, certified organic farm on a 57 acre parcel of land operated collaboratively between the Town of Woodbridge and a Board of Directors comprised of local citizens. The property was deeded to the town by the Massaro Family, who had farmed the land since 1916. Our farm operation includes a 150-member CSA, and a series of education and family-related events throughout the year. Our vision is to enhance the quality of life for generations to come. In July 2012, the board approved a five-year strategic plan. This plan is intended to be a living document and will be reviewed by the board each year in connection with its annual planning and budgeting processes. KEEP FARMING |
The farm includes 45 acres of woods and wetlands along with 12 acres of fields, and we currently have 7.5 acres of working farmland today that produces fruits, vegetables, flowers and honey. Our farming operation supports our seasonal CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program, and provides organic vegetables to area restaurants that feature local produce, such as Wheeler’s Market Cafe, Miya’s and Zinc. We will also begin offering farm stand hours during the 2013 season. Please visit our CSA page for more information about subscribing to the CSA in 2013. |
FEED PEOPLE |
In addition to supplying produce through our CSA and to area restaurants, we have committed to donate 10% of what we grow to local hunger relief organizations. The amount donated has increased since our first year of operation. In 2012, our food donations totaled just over 6,600 pounds of food, with a market value of approximately $14,000. Our current list of food donors include The Woodbridge Senior Center, BH Care (in Ansonia), Columbus House (in New Haven) and Jewish Family Services (in New Haven). Read our detailed report of our food donations in 2012 here. |
BUILD COMMUNITY |
The farm is open space to be explored and enjoyed by all. We encourage the exploration of our nature trail, which includes ~2 miles through the woods and wetlands behind our growing fields. We hold several large events each year: Celebrate Spring offers the purchase of flowers and vegetable seedlings and basic instructional guidance on starting your backyard garden. Dinner on the farm engages the senses through a farm-to-table meal offered right in our fields and featuring produce from the farm. Family Fun Day is a fall harvest celebration featuring music, food and family friendly activities. We also provide a number of education programs and workshops throughout the year including our Summer Camp on the Farm, film screenings, beekeeping, and other workshops related to sustainability. Check back often to see what new programs we have created for you. |
