The “Re-Establishing Our Roots” Capital Campaign is an extraordinary opportunity for the friends of Massaro Community Farm to help us realize our mission to keep farming, feed those in need and to educate our community about sustainable agriculture, improving the quality of life for generations to come. Our goal is to raise $150,000 to allow for renovations to our dairy barn, build out our education and workshop facilities and refurbish the Old Stone House, among many other things.

Massaro Community Farm is a non profit farm on a 57 acre parcel of land in Woodbridge, Connecticut, 10 minutes northwest of New Haven. Our mission is to preserve the farm for growing food, to feed those in need, and to educate our community about sustainable agriculture, enhancing the quality of life for generations.

The farm includes 45 acres of woods and wetlands along with 12 acres of fields, and we currently have almost 5 acres of working farmland today that produces fruits, vegetables, flowers and honey. Our CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program is now in its 2nd year with 150 members and we will be launching our farm stand this year. We donate a percentage of what we grow to local hunger relief organizations – in 2010 we donated over 4700 pounds of food – and we are expanding our food donation program partnerships. This summer, we will be launching a number of education programs for children and adults as well including beekeeping, backyard chicken and composting workshops.

$150,000 Capital Campaign is Underway!!!

Dairy Barn

The barn, built in the 1940s, was partially restored in 2009 when the shell and roof were repaired. However, there were insufficient funds to complete the build-out of the first floor where the food is to be washed, stored and distributed. Like-wise the second floor, which will become a prime educational and event space for the MCF and the town. It is there that revenue-generating educational programs and community events will be run. Come and ask us for your own special tour!

Stone Barn

A renovation of the Old Stone Barn that John Massaro and his family built by hand will not only help preserve an historic site but will make it possible for Massaro Community Farm to use it as a community space and have it open for the public to see and appreciate.

Pavilion

An outdoor, covered pavilion space will be a perfect place for meetings, workshops and even community dinners and will help increase Massaro Community Farm’s ability to connect with the community by offering a unique and beautiful space for more events, lectures and workshops. This multi-purpose space will be centrally located, so you can see the entire farm and appreciate nature all around.

Learning Garden

We will be building a 50×50 foot outdoor space in which we can host a multitude of food, farm and garden related education programs. This space is intended for kids of all ages and adults, and will be handicap accessible.

Berries

Imagine a field of blueberries, blackberries and raspberries, one where you may walk through at your leisure, enjoying the beautiful and quiet surroundings while picking your own berries to enjoy at your dinner table that evening.

Fruit Tree Establishment and Pollinator Plantings

Come help be a friend to the bees and our newly developed eco-system! We will be planting fruit and other deciduous trees this season for wind breaks, erosion control, wildlife and beneficial insect habitat and improving the general look and feel of our beautiful farm!

Nature Trails

A certified Forester will be helping us put together a Forestry Management Plan which will include a maze of Nature trails through our 45 acres of forest and wetlands.
