Moving Planet Day

350.org’s MOVING PLANET DAY

Saturday, September 24, 2011

Time and Place: 9:30am at Town Green

Moving Planet will be a day to put our demands for climate action into motion—marching, biking, skating—calling for the world to go beyond fossil fuels.

The goal is to get moving beyond fossil fuels—both symbolically by pouring into the streets in the thousands on foot, bicycle and other means of sustainable movement, and politically by bringing powerful demands to our leaders that day to move beyond fossil fuels to a 350ppm world.

The idea for Moving Planet came from 350.org, a global campaign and network that works with grassroots organizers in 188 countries to mobilize against climate change and for a just future. Moving Planet is a collaborative effort of many organizations, movements, and individuals.

Description of event: Join Board Member Jon Gorham via bicycle for a unique solar panel installation tour around the town of Woodbridge and learn who is saving energy and how. Leave the Town Green at 9:30 for short bike ride to solar installation number one, a passive solar and photovoltaic powered ceramics studio on Ford Road. The owner and builder will give a talk on how he has designed and built this building from on-site and recycled materials. We will next ride five minutes to solar installation number two, the Massaro Community Farm (MCF). The Wisconsin barn at MCF has a 5 kW solar PV array that the town Clean Energy Initiative Task Force donated to this 57-acre organic farm. We will then proceed down Ford Road to Savino Vineyard, our last stop and end there.

To register for this bike ride, go to Moving Planet: http://www.moving-planet.org/events/us/woodbridge/729

More than 100 riders take part in third annual bicycling event that spotlights local musicians together with local growers.

August 20, 2011: It was without a doubt a beautiful August day for a bicycle ride. And fresh vegetables. And fresh fruit. And fresh dairy. And fresh, local musical sounds.

CT Folk‘s third annual Tour des Farms — a 25-mile leisure bike ride to local farms, gardens, and other agricultural treasures in Connecticut — rolled the hills and valleys of Amity earlier today.

Throughout this morning and early afternoon the tour made stops at Treat Farm and Field View Farm in Orange, Massaro Community Farm and Savino Vineyards in Woodbridge, as well as the Ansonia Nature Center.

ORANGE-WOODBRIDGE — CT Folk’s Tour des Farms, a day-long bicycle ride on Saturday, Aug. 20, will start at Treat Farm in Orange with stops at Massaro Farm and Savino Vineyards in Woodbridge, Field View Farm and the Ansonia Nature Center.

The tour will take cyclists to local farms, gardens and other agricultural sites along a 25-mile route. At each farm riders can stop to hear a Connecticut-grown musician perform.

CT Folk has programmed a lineup of independent singer/songwriters from across the state. Artists will perform for riders at each farm stop with their blend of contemporary folk and roots music. At the end of the tour, riders and non-riders are invited to an outdoor concert at Treat Farm, 361 Old Tavern Road, Orange, featuring a song swap with all singer/songwriters heard along the route.

Tour des Farms and Pizza, Pickles and Pedals

“Who doesn’t like a bike ride on a late summer day? Or to eat fresh, locally grown produce and dairy right on the farm? Or to enjoy live music performed by Connecticut-based musicians in the natural theater of the great outdoors?

How about an all-day, family-friendly event that combines all three?”
- Julie Weisberg of the Orange Patch wrote an article about our Pizza, Pickles and Pedals event (Aug. 20) that is also in association with CT Folk’s Tour des Farms.

Read the article and come out to Massaro Farm August 20th for an all day family affair!

Crops Hit by Hail

Robin Walluck of the ValleyGazette.com wrote a story about the hail storm that hit the farm bad:

“The Massaro Community Farm on the Ansonia-Woodbridge town line, didn’t luck out on Monday, Aug. 1, as hail and heavy rain hit the area. The farm got slammed by the storm.

‘The damage is significant,’ said Melissa Waldron Lehner, outreach and partnership coordinator in Woodbridge. “The remay hoop house is torn in a bunch of places and lettuce and other leafy greens have been ripped to shreds. The zucchini are all dented, and the hail ripped tomatoes off the vine.”
