Solar Youth Visits MCF!

Solar Youth, a non-profit environmental education and youth development organization in New Haven brought the students out to visit us last week for their first farm field trip. And the kids had a blast. They worked with Farmer Steve to plant cucumber seeds and helped dig rocks out of the garden. Solar Youth exists to provide opportunities for young people to develop a positive sense of self and connection and commitment to others through programs that incorporate environmental exploration, leadership and community service. Farming is a great way to connect the kids to the earth and to themselves and we are really thrilled they chose to visit Massaro Community Farm.

CT Beekeepers: Fall Hive Preparation

Beekeeping: Fall Hive Preparation

Fall Hive Preparation, Mite Testing and Remediation. Join us as CT Beekeepers President, Ted Jones & CT Ag Experiment Station Microbiologist, Doug Dingman provide hands-on demonstrations in the Massaro Farm apiary. In addition to best practices for hive management, Ted will be demonstrating mite detection and control techniques while Doug will show methods for checking to Nosema apis. Sign up for one of the 90 minute sessions on August 20th. Session 1 at 10am / Session 2 at 12pm. Limit 20-people per session. Preregistration is required. Appropriate attire is required: long pants and long sleeves. Veils will be provided to each attendee, or bring your own bee suit. Pizza, Pickles and Pedals

Come join us at the farm for a day of workshops and pizza on the grill, using Massaro Community Farm produce. We will be cheering on the riders from the Tour de Farms bike circuit too! CT Folk artists to play in the afternoon. Music, food and fun. Don’t miss it! Details to be announced soon.

Preparing the Winter Garden/CT NOFA Workshop

Monday, August 15, 5-8pm, presented by Farm Manager Steve Munno

Want to harvest greens from your garden through the fall and in to the early winter? Come to Massaro Community Farm in Woodbridge, CT where Farm Manager Steve Munno will talk about what to plant and when to plant it to ensure a bounty of greens and other crops. We’ll sow seeds directly in the ground and prepare others for future transplanting. We’ll also have a chance to work with low hoops and floating row cover, which you can use to protect your crhttp://www.massarofarm.org/wp/wp-admin/post-new.phpops from frost and help extend your harvest season. Night Walk with Elisa Black

Wednesday, July 27th , 7-8:30pm
Take a walk through the trails and observe dusk time at Massaro Farm. Be sure to bring a flashlight, apply bug spray and wear long pants. Elisa Black has an M.S. in Environmental Education and has worked as a naturalist and environmental educator for 10 years. As a member of our Education Committee, Elisa brings expertise, energy, and enthusiasm to programs at Massaro Community Farm. Join us for our first Night Walk!
